I've wanted to draw a Gemsona character for a while, but didn't have any ideas for one until now. I figured I'd have a crack at it in preparation for the Season 3 premiere of Steven Universe.

Say hello to Tanzanite! Tanzanite ("Tanzy" for short) is a Grade-A assassin and a master of stealth and archery. Among the Gem community, she is a rarely seen and mysterious figure, utilizing the shadows to her greatest advantage and her uncanny ability to camouflage into any environment. With her bow, Tanzanite has a remarkable aim and always lands her target before her victims even know what hit them. She can conjure arrows at a shear willpower, as well as a mask to conceal her identity during missions. To some, she is hailed as the ultimate Gem soldier.
However, her impeccable archery skills come with a price. As an assassin for hire, focusing a majority of her time on work, Tanzanite lacks proper social skills. She's an intimidating threat to her victims, but in person, she's shy, introverted, apologetic, and emotionally sensitive. Tanzanite yearns to have a better life than the one she's currently pursuing as a lone assassin. Sometimes, when the stress of work and lack of social interaction becomes overbearing for her, she breaks down into tears, having deep regrets of her life choices, specifically all the Gems she helped do away with, and ponders if she'll even be able to manage herself if she decides to quit her assassin career in order to pursue a normal life. On a daily basis, Tanzanite undergoes a never ending array of conflict, both physically and internally.

I originally thought about making my Gemsona a male, but seeing how every Gem we've seen on the show so far has been female (Steven not withstanding, being half human), I didn't want my character to be inconsistent with the rest of the Gems if it's revealed that all Gems exclusively take on a female human form.
With that in mind, I wanted to incorporate aspects of myself that were based more on emotions and personality. To give her a more personal connection to myself, I did some research on Wikipedia about birthstones that coincided with the month I was born (December), hence why I specifically chose Tanzanite for my Gemsona: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanzanit…
*I also learned that Lapis Lazuli is one of my birthstones!
Since my Zodiac sign is a Sagittarius, who is an archer, I thought it'd seem natural for Tanzanite to be a master of archery, as well.

If it's revealed that there are Gems that take on male forms in SU, I might be tempted to draw a genderbent design of Tanzanite in the future! ^^

Did you know that Tanzanite is a type of Zosite? She is in the same family as Anyolite and Rosaline!
